Speech Research

Eight scientific conference with international participation
Zagreb, December 5th-7th 2013.

The eight scientific conference with international participation Speech research will be held in Zagreb, Croatia from the 5th until the 7th of December 2013. Initially named Speech communications, the first Speech research conference took place in 1984. Since 1995 it is organised triennially in December. Speech research is organised by the Department of Phonetics at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Zagreb and the Phonetics Section at the Croatian Philological Association, aiming to stimulate the development of phonetics and other speech sciences. Being an interdisciplinary speech science, phonetics is closely connected with speech technology, so the conference provides an opportunity to meet researchers from different disciplines, to present results from recent investigations and to discuss relevant topics. During almost two decades, the conference provided researchers from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences, the Medical School, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing and the Academy of Dramatic Arts with the opportunity to meet and share their knowledge. The quality of presentations earned the conference international acclaim, confirmed by the participants from the USA, Canada, the UK, Portugal, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina as well as Montenegro. International collaboration and interdisciplinary approach make this conference extremely important not only for advances in phonetics, but also for Croatian science in general.

The main topic of this year's conference is Artistic voice, but papers covering two other topics are equally accepted: General phonetic topics and Rhetorics. Also, this year marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Academician Petar Guberina, the founder of phonetics in Zagreb. One session will therefore be devoted to him.
