Course: Culture and Civilization of Dutch Speaking Areas II

ECTS credits: 3

Course description: This course introduces students to the basics of Dutch culture and society by analyzing and interpreting the given literature and based on independent preparation for the lectures. Students will acquire knowledge of the entire Dutch language area with an emphasis on the contemporary (post-war) Netherlands. They will learn about the Dutch identity through the Dutch stereotypes and code of conduct, both in everyday life and in the business world.

Learning outcomes: Students will be able to: describe the historical changes of pillarization in the Netherlands and determine which consequences of the pillarization have shaped the modern society; describe the most important characteristics of three feminist wave, name their most prominent members and their achievements; define religious communities; define the most important facts about the media; outline the most important laws that define the foundation of a tolerant Dutch society; critically evaluate tolerant and multicultural society; compare the Netherlands and Belgium (the emphasis is on Belgium) - a sociolinguistic approach; distinguish and name the most famous works of Dutch painters that define the Dutch identity; identify, explain and use the most famous Dutch (social) stereotypes; identify, explain and use knowledge of Dutch customs and code of conduct.

Teaching methods: teaching through lectures, exercises and teacher-led demonstrations in the classroom, presentations, classroom discussion, E-Learning (Omega, etc.)
