Course: Phonetics and Phonology of the Contemporary German Language

ECTS credits: 4

Enrolment requirements: course “Semantics of the Contemporary German Language”

Course description: During the series of 15 lectures the students will learn to differentiate the phonetics and phonology of languages. Special attention will be given to the description and practical skills of articulating sounds of German as well as identify articulatory differences between German and Croatian. Additionally, students will be enabled to practically apply specific features of German phonology.

Learning outcomes: Students will be able to: differentiate between the notions of phonetics and phonology, describe articulatory organs and articulatory processes, describe the correct articulation of German consonants and vocals as well as articulate them correctly, describe basic notions of acoustic and perceptive phonetics, define basic notions in phonology (phoneme, allophone, distinctive features, syllable, phonological word etc.), apply some important rules of German phonology, such as syllabification, accentuation of words, phrases and sentences

Evaluation Methods and Grading: midterm exam + end of semester exam; if failed, then written exam; for students with special needs (dyslexia, visual impairment etc.) oral exam.
