Course: Introduction to Dutch (for Students of German Language and Literature)

ECTS credits: 2

Course description: Dutch is linguistically the closest language to German. Learning a different Germanic language is not only beneficial because of acquiring a new skill of knowing another language but it also helps to understanding the German language. Following this course, students of German language and literature will learn about the Dutch language with the focus on language acquisition, the status and history of the language and the differences between Dutch and German.

Learning outcomes: Students will be able to: define 3 markers that define the socio-cultural position of Dutch in the world, list and describe the main historical periods of the Dutch language, name the main differences between German and Dutch on the level of morphology, syntax, pronunciation and vocabulary, understand Dutch on the level of simple everyday topics, understand simple texts (written and oral).
