Course: Contemporary German Language II

Enrolment requirements: course “Contemporary German Language I”

Course description: This course builds on the previous course “Contemporary German Language 1”. The focus is to improve students’ language skills (reading, listening, speaking and writing). The stress is on the morphological and syntactic accuracy within the standard German language. The course covers following topics: grammar: German verbs with prepositions/case, finite and non-finite verb forms, tenses, active/passive voice and moods (indicative, subjunctive, imperative), indirect speech, repetition.

Learning outcomes: Through various reading, writing, listening and speaking exercises, and through the individual study of grammar, students should be able to express themselves fluently and spontaneously (orally and in writing) with minimal grammatical errors. They will learn to use reference books, especially dictionaries and grammar handbooks.

Evaluation Methods and Grading: class attendance, two written essays, reading, summary and (oral) translation of the contemporary literature in the German language, written and oral exam
