Textual Analysis of Večernji List Front Page Headlines

The paper offers a textual analysis of a sample of headlines published on the front pages of Večernji list in two socioculturally different periods, 1988, a year of late socialism and 2000, ten years after the transitional processes started. The goal of the paper is to trace down and analyse the shifts observed within a particual discourse type and relate them to wider changes within society. The methodological procedure is conceived as including two levels of analysis, linguistic and intertextual, drawn from the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis as designed by the British linguist Norman Fairclough, and complemented with 'social semiotics' of the British linguists, Gunther Kress and Theo van Leeuwen.

Dynamism of Successive Childhood Bilingualism

The paper presents two theoretical models of multilingual/bilingual development – Dynamic Model of Multilingualism (DMM) and Thresholds Theory (TT). The data from a case study of a successive Croatian (L1) – English (L2) bilingual development are presented in the light of DMM and TT. The author concludes that the mentioned models have a significant explanatory power but are not yet refined enough to present a multitude of aspects and interacting components in the development of successive childhood bilingualism.

Gundulić Translator of Girolamo Preti

This paper, employing an analysis and comparison at the metrical, semantic, syntactic, rhetorical and narrative levels, investigates the relationship between Gundulić’s text Ljubovnik sramežljiv (The Bashful Lover) and three compositions of which it is a partial paraphrase, L’amante timido, L’Amante occulto, and Amor segreto, costante e pudico all by his contemporary Girolamo Preti. Gundulić’s interventions and reworking resulted in a text with a much stricter and more compact structure, a more powerful conceptual and rhetorical charge and greater semantic intensity than any of the originals that he employed. Moreover, Gundulić, departed from the canon of narration characteristic of the genre of the idyll, constructing his text exclusively through the interplay of verbal elements. From the groundwork provided by Preti’s texts, Gundulić derived a kind of static abstract, organized on the basis of relationships formed between the elements of its complex and multi-layered rhetorical structure.

Perfume of Texts, Subversive Embraces. A personal retrospect involving “formalist” readings of Ulysses

In this talk presented at the Bloomsday 100 International Joyce symposium in Dublin in June 2004, Sonja Bašić offered a personal retrospect of her involvement in Joyce studies. While fully aware of the need to broaden the field of Joycean theory and criticism, she advocates the use of a formalist approach resting on the pioneering work of the Russian formalists but expanding into kindred fields such as narratology (Genette, Cohn, Barthes), reader-oriented criticism (Iser), etc. She argues that Joyce's greatest innovation was his sudden and frame-breaking juxtaposition of stylistic and narrative registers informed by a supreme awareness of the forms of language. This is why, she concludes,—being the most deliberately formalist of the modernist writers—Joyce will always need the services of formalist critics.

In memoriam à esquecida Antónia Gertrudes Pusich
