Although the history of German language teaching at Croatian universities goes even further back (the German Language Lectorate of the Faculty of Philosophy was founded in 1876, two years after the founding of the University of Zagreb), the beginning of the scholarly study of German language and literature dates back to the year 1895, when the German Language Chair was founded.
