Milivoj Solar was born on 8 April 1936 in Koprivnica, where he attented elementary school and high school. He studied Philosophy and Jugoslavian Studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities in Zagreb, where he obtained a PhD on Fran Galović in 1964. Since 1963 he worked at the Faculty as an assistant, lecturer and assistant professor, and in 1976 he became a full professor at the Comparative Literature department's Section of theory and methodology of studying literature. He had been invited to other Universities as a lecturer as well. In the late eighties (1987-1990) he was the Republic Minister of education and culture.

He published numerous works in literary and professional journals, and for his essays on literary theory he was awarded the City of Zagreb Award in 1972, the Božidar Adžija Award in 1975 and the Vladimir Nazor Award in1977. Over a hundred reviews have been published on his works in domestic and foreign journals and newspapers.
