Marijana Bijelić was born in 1978 in Dubrovnik, where she also she went to Marin Držić Elementary School. In 1997 she graduated the Dubrovnik General High School.
In 1999 she enrolled in the Croatian and Slavic languages and literatures study programme at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. When she was a student, she published translations from Bulgarian literature into Croatian, as well as attended summer and winter courses in Bulgarian language, literature, and culture in Bulgaria. In 2005 she graduated with a diploma paper “Micro-poetical and Macro-poetical Stylistic Strategies in the Novel Travnička hronika by Ivo Andrić“.She has been employed as a junior researcher and teaching assistant since November 2005, working on a project Intercultural Literary History (under supervision by Zvonko Kovač as project leader). She teaches in Bulgarian literature courses at the Department of South Slavic languages and literatures, regularly publishing papers on Bulgarian literature and Slavic themes from a comparative perspective. In 2006 she enrolled in the Postgraduate and Doctoral Study of Literature, Performing Arts, Film and Culture at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb. In May and June 2008, she was at the Sofia University St Kliment Ohridski as a CEEPUS scholarship holder. During this scholarship period she participated with a paper in the 35th-anniversary jubilee conference of the Chair for general and comparative history of St Cyril and St Methodius University of Veliko Turnovo. On December 20th 2011 she defended her doctoral thesis entitled “Sacrifice as a Structural Model of the September Literature in the Bulgarian Literary Avant-garde“. In May 2013 she participated in an Erasmus staff mobility programme, during which she gave four lectures at the South West University Neofit Rilski in Blagoevgrad. Since 2016, she has been working as a senior lecturer at the Department of South Slavic Languages and Literature at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Zagreb, with the last re-election effected in March 2021.
